Geo-referenced 3D Model to Evaluate Architectural Design Quality

[Collaboration with Archilyse AG. Zürich, 2020]

Archilyse helps architects to analyse the impact of their design decisions at different levels by generating views and sun simulations. As a use case, we selected the “#175_QDC”, single-family home, from Philippe Meyer.

The building is located in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland. This residential project involved the renovation of a former office building on the shores of the Geneva lake. A continuous glass facade connects the rather strict forms of the building with the lake and views toward the water on a sloped site near the shore. References are made to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House (Plano, Illinois, 1951) and the Barcelona Pavilion (1929).

<img width="1000" height="563" width_o="1000" height_o="563" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2b82569204584388f48486c759d55660434591b7ea158f985872a492ad0e0299/img_2.jpg" data-mid="80006924" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2b82569204584388f48486c759d55660434591b7ea158f985872a492ad0e0299/img_2.jpg" />About the Simulations

In each room of the house, Archilyse simulates a 360° panoramic view, based on a hexagonal grid. The panoramic views are done every 0.5 meters from the surface of each room. For each panoramic view simulation, the percentage of views of each type of element (buildings, green spaces, water, etc.) is calculated. The 3D model on which the simulations are based is built from a combination of GIS data sources.

<img width="1000" height="563" width_o="1000" height_o="563" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cc128c88e9cfb73f97d6e348384bd9091267ecdf685ea9f968d27a6af09deff6/img_3.jpg" data-mid="80006931" border="0" data-scale="86" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cc128c88e9cfb73f97d6e348384bd9091267ecdf685ea9f968d27a6af09deff6/img_3.jpg" />
Greenery view simulation Calculates the visible amount of green areas.

Related design decisions:

Bring nature into the house.
Make a strong relation between liveable spaces and the green area.
In the most greenery point of the first floor, place a family space with the kitchen and living room, divided by a dining room.
Less liveable spaces (e.g. bathrooms and corridors) can be placed in the rear.
Use a rectangular geometry on the floor plan to gain a low footprint and let vegetation be an important element of the project.
Make use of a metal framework containing the glazing, which includes sliding sections that can be opened to let fresh air into the interior.
Place important views not in front of trees so they don’t block them.
Use trees as an acoustic barrier to protect from the street and noise from vehicles.
The water view simulationCalculates the visible amount of a water body such as a river, creek, lake or ocean areas.

Related design decisions:

Direct all the liveable spaces towards the lake.
Set observational points with the main focus to the views.
Angle liveable spaces to maximise panoramic views to the lake.
Incorporates protective blinds that can be lowered to filter the light reflecting off the surface of the lake.
Free up the internal arrangement on the front portion of the plan for use as an open space containing the kitchen, dining area, lounge and master bedroom, maximising water views.

The building view simulationCalculates the visible amount of all elements which are labeled as buildings.

Related design decisions

In the less exposed point of the floor plan, make use of a structure made of pillars to provide a social point where different activities can be made.
Establishing the large open-plan living area is connected to a terrace on the second floor where the house is less exposed.
Set up internal curtains can be around spaces that require privacy.
Make a compact volume to make the building appear to be smaller and visually less obtrusive.

The mountain view simulationCalculates the visible amount of all elements which are ground and at least 500m higher than the observation point.

Related design decisions

Open up the views over the landscape.
Make use of the geometry to frame the landscape.
Full-height glazing on the first floor provides views to the landscape.
Place the best mountain views so trees don’t block them.
Consider how trees block or allow views in the winter and in summer.
Provide correct views to sunset in Summer (northwest) and winter (southwest).

The street view simulation Calculates the visible amount of all elements which are street-like.

Related design decisions

As part of the acoustic strategy, define a geometry of the house, the way trees keep on the plot and these act as an acoustic barrier.
Depending on the simulation values, use triple glazing windows to avoid noise coming from the street.
Use the existing trees as acoustic barriers.
Consider the views from the vehicles to the house and use corresponding glass protection.

The sun analysis simulation Calculates the amount of direct sun and scattered light irradiation.

Related design decisions

Position the house on a south-north axis to maximise the exposure from the sun.
Place the house within an optimal orientation to get enough sunlight.
Place the bed-room in the left corner so circulation improves and the living room gets more light and it is more accessible to the swimming pool. Also the house inhabitants spend less time on rooms.
Provide more light to the dry spaces of the house by placing them into the right area of the house.
Reduce the amount of heating usage by positioning living spaces to the south.
Place open spaces (e.g. living room and dining) so events can be easily organised.
Place a visor on the south facade so the space is correctly protected from the sun.
Depending on the simulation values, consider not using Full-height glazing on the south facade.

1st Prize For a Leisure and Sport Centre
[Zürich, 2019]

The Weyermannshaus Sport and Recreation Facility “Weyerli” is located to the west of Bern. In the near future it is planned a new city quarter for this area. The main goal for the leisure and sport centre’s redesign is to have a low footprint, so more vegetation on this area can be planned. The solution is a compact volume designed with a green roof, which only occupies the corner of the plot. From the swimming hall on the upper floor, the view opens up over the landscape and the open-air pool. Thanks to the park’s entrances and paths, the access to the building is guaranteed from every direction. For this reason of centrality and because of the fantastic view, the main entrance was positioned towards the centre of the park. After entering the building, the entrance hall offers a view of the various areas of use.

<img width="2560" height="1048" width_o="2560" height_o="1048" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/dbcf288fb986ae1f0099f74b5a05d71fd44f99e6cad976b733248ef6822233e3/berrel_4.jpg" data-mid="101817798" border="0" data-scale="79" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/dbcf288fb986ae1f0099f74b5a05d71fd44f99e6cad976b733248ef6822233e3/berrel_4.jpg" />At the node between Stöckackerstrasse and the old Murtenstrasse, the required spaces were combined in such a way that they occupy the smallest possible area and the various uses benefit from the short distances. Due to the different room heights of the individual halls, a building was created that is composed of several pavilion-like bodies, thus playfully structuring the large volume. This results in a flattening from the street to the outdoor pool, so that the building seems to merge with the park. From the swimming hall on the upper floor, the view opens out over the hilly landscape and the open-air pool.

Thanks to the numerous entrances and paths of the park, access to the building is guaranteed from any cardinal direction. For this reason of centrality and because of the fantastic view, the main entrance was positioned towards the center of the park. After entering the building, the overheight entrance hall offers a view of the different areas of use. Through a glass front one looks down into the ice rink, while upwards the space opens to the indoor swimming pool.

1st Prize for a New Flagship Store Concept

[Collaboration with Mint Architecture.

Zúrich, 2019]

Mint Architecture wins the competition for the planned m-way flagship store. The new design concept puts the customer experience in the foreground. The concept will be implemented first in the urban quarter "Gleistribüne" at the HB Zürich Nord as a flagship store and will then gradually be implemented in all existing m-way shops.

The design competition was for a electro-bikes competition. The company “M-way” has 36 shops in Switzerland. Within the shop, there are different bike-related topics. (City, Pendler, Touring, Mountain Bike). We wanted to be very simple, not too much furniture. We did a mood-board, an interior architecture document where we give an idea of how the materials and furniture should look like. We chose the wood material to enhance the light in the shop. The combination of wood and concrete gives the shop a minimalistic and green-tech feeling. The palette of materials were grey concrete, wood and light metal. In the middle of the shop we want to provide a social experience, we call it “social celebration”, where there is a welcoming, cafe and consultation area.

Passion for Culture at Hermannstrasse

[Collaboration with Anderhalten Architekten. Berlin, 2018]

Introduction
This project is located in Berlin. The plot is between Hermansstrasse and Airport “Tempelhof”. The design competition challenge was to design a Social Hub and Office building.

Idea / Urban Planning
The new building has an unconventional geometry, in contrast to the adjacent buildings typical of the area. These two buildings have different connections, on the one hand, the social hub is looking to the street and the office building has a strong relation with the green area.
On the social hub, the main idea was to design three different volumes within the same space, where all the programs could easily be placed in each of the three volumes. These three volumes have unconventional geometry and the shape of them is the result of combining the views, the rules of the place and the elements that were already on the floor plan.
This was an interesting process, where we first drew sketches and diagrams. With this document, we explain the concept to the rest of the team. After that we built a physical model and decided on which design was the best.

Radbahnplus in Berlin Public Space
[Collaboration with CitizenPlus. 2018]

Radbahn is an internationally celebrated urban transformation concept in the heart of Berlin. It transforms the forgotten space along Berlin’s famous U1 elevated subway line into a 9-km-long urban artery and creates a space for contemporary mobility, innovation, leisure, and arts. It has won renowned prizes, attracted enormous media interest from both German and international media, closed a successful crowdfunding campaign and the book Radbahn Berlin – Future Visions for the Ecomobile City is now available internationally.

What is Radbahnplus about?
RadbahnPlus is a communication channel between cities and citizens.
RadbahnPlus conceptualizes and visualizes the dynamics, structure, and character of a city by analyzing the social media its residents already generate. Our vision is to help governments and urban planners to make smarter decisions for cities.
As a RadbahnPlus user, you can report incidents and experiences to RadbahnPlus social media pages.
RadbahnPlus captures the accuracy and frequency of data reported by its users to enhance the urban public space experience.

Augmentify Gets 1st Place on Techcrunch ESRI Challenge
[Collaboration with Paul Kunze and Ferdinand Lösch. Berlin. 2017]

Preceding the Disrupt Conference is Hackathon weekend on 2-3 December, where developers and engineers descend from all over the world to take part in a 24-hour hacking endurance test. Teams join forces to build a new product, present it on the Disrupt stage to a panel of expert judges and an audience of tens of thousands and compete for a variety of prizes, including the chance to win free tickets to the Disrupt Conference. Products created at the Disrupt Hackathon have seen great success beyond the event, like GroupMe which was created overnight and ultimately acquired by Skype for $80M.

If you are new in a city - whether as a tourist, a workshop participant or a new inhabitant - it can be pretty hard to find the best locations around you for the specific thing you want to do. You are a tourist and want to make sure to not miss any important sight that is just around the corner? You just arrived in a yet unknown city to attend a workshop and need to get around quickly, find an ATM and your hotel in time? Or you just moved in and want to experience the best local restaurants, bars, and events nearby? We have the perfect solution for all of these cases!

What it Does?

Our mobile app shows you important places that are just around the corner by augmenting the real world with different markers that indicate your goal. Just hold the phone in front of you and turn around while you see all the important places and their distance from your current position.

According to your use case, you can even filter what should be displayed. Let the app show you famous monuments and historic buildings on your holiday trip until you get hungry and change the filter to only see the best restaurants nearby.

When arriving in the city of your next workshop you can highlight the position of the hotel that was already booked for you and easily finds the workshop location when you arrive at the nearest train station.

If you just moved in, your top priority might be to know the most important shops for your daily grocery shopping. If you are vegetarian, a sushi lover or just on a low budget, the app can adapt to your needs and show you only what is really relevant to you.

Accomplishments that we're Proud of

We managed to integrate all the necessary features into a very user-friendly interface that can be used without any prior knowledge about the app. Everything is efficiently connected and works fluently which leads to an effortless use and creates a great user experience.<img width="2500" height="1406" width_o="2500" height_o="1406" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d9c0938ea4d4a0af6503037fe054296bb84316472a358c33112c65fd7ea58c1a/Augmentify_03.jpg" data-mid="14114528" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d9c0938ea4d4a0af6503037fe054296bb84316472a358c33112c65fd7ea58c1a/Augmentify_03.jpg" />

Urban Catalogue to Build a Custom Neighborhood

[Collaboration with Luis Basabe and Luis Pancorbo. Madrid. 2015]
Introduction
The project is situated in the suburbia of Madrid. After a research and interviews, the feeling we got was that suburban houses are all similar and nobody wants to do anything out of the ordinary.
Idea

The projects are separate boxes linked by shared spaces. In the same building different programs can be placed. These are all ruled by planning rules. It is like a mini-village that gives people all they need. All the houses have a private outside space and some of them have a roof terrace linked to the bedroom upstairs. Downstairs, they have a kitchen, dining room and a second bedroom. The building blocks are very simple, containers, no complexity in the geometry. The complexity comes on how smart are integrated in the grid.&nbsp; In the middle points, people come to eat, meet and drink. The idea is to have a balance between the private and the communal space.
