A Courtyard for Inspiration
[Teaching with Unidad Manuel Feo. Gran Canaria. 2009]

This house is located in the suburbia of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The main idea is to bring nature into the house. Nature is a great inspiration for an artist that is why we used the courtyard to make this happen. The courtyard is designed to be the heart of this house. Not only works as a cooling device but also to bring life. The size is bigger than the kitchen or the living room. It is designed to be the most important room in this house and it can be used in different ways; As a meditation space, live concerts, expositions or a garden with exotic plants. The glass walls allow the courtyard to be viewed from every direction, providing exotic views to the house inhabitants.

The house has three independent apartments, every living room has a balcony, which allows the inhabitant to be next to the courtyard. Also this unconventional geometry was designed to create secret spaces to be discovered. For example reading areas or small viewpoints.

The building doesn’t tell what is going to happen inside. The house looks quite monolithic on the outside but on the inside is not like that at all, it is almost a labyrinth-like space.
