Ideally Positioned House to Enjoy Sea Views
[Collaboration with Gregorio Prats. Lanzarote. 2013]
Introduction
Located in Lanzarote, in a coastal area with views to the sea. Very warm weather and a bit windy. It is the perfect location for holidays. This house is a building that is really related to its climate.
Idea
The challenge was to direct all the liveable spaces towards the sea, and most of the design decisions were influenced by the most important element of this environment, the weather and the wind. The shape of this design creates the stability needed to deal with strong winds.
The structure was cleverly positioned on a east-west axis to minimise exposure from the hot sun, and at the same time allowing light and air to filter through the house.
This volume has an Alvaro Siza inspiration geometry, where balconies are angled in different directions to maximise panoramic views to the sea. The idea was to take the traditional canary house building form (white walls, volcanic stone, and flat roof) and transform into a contemporary language.
Program
The floor plan consists of two sides. On one side are the bedrooms and on the other side the family space with kitchen and living room, divided by a dining room. On the ground floor, a large open-plan living area is connected to a terrace with a swimming pool. On the second floor all the bedrooms have views to the sea.
